First of all let me declare that I did not get a revelation, vision or dream on this but just a conviction that it is not right for Christians to use the Easter word when referring to Passover celebration or Good Friday. I am neither a preacher or a bible scholar but a Christian man.
In 2015 I wrote an article cautioning Christians not to confuse ‘Good Friday’ and ‘Easter’. My point of view was that the word Good Friday should not be replaced by Easter. Then, there was no AI but today there is I want to use it to make my point.
AI tells us that the origins of Easter are a blend of Christian tradition and ancient pagan spring festivals. While Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the name “Easter” and some associated traditions likely have roots in the pagan goddess Eastre or Eostre. Eostre is connected to themes of fertility, renewal, and the changing seasons, and her name is linked to the east, where the sun rises.
There are many symbols of Eastre. Some of which are the egg and bunny (rabbit); standing for sex and fertility.
The controversy
- Blend of Christian tradition and ancient pagan spring festivals – 2 Corinthians 6:14 – Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
- Goddess Eastre or Eostre – Exodus 23:13 “And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.” (KJV).
- Symbols – Jesus symbol is the cross and not an egg or a bunny.
Conclusion
People will interpret ‘Easter’ for what suits them. In first world countries such as the US, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is about eggs and bunnies as corporates commercialize this event. However, if we stick to Good Friday, even though ‘Passover’ will be even more appropriate, people will not interpret the phrase for anything else. I’m not saying that people of the world should not be allowed to celebrate their Easter festivals if they want to, but the word ‘Easter’ should not be heard of in Christendom.
I believe that for Christianity to stand out in all respects, it should not be clouded with other things, particularly with those related to gods. Having put forth my points, I strongly believe that Good Friday (Passover) is of God but Easter is of the world.
I therefore implore my Christian brothers and sisters to switch from Easter to that which rightfully belongs to us ‘Passover’ or ‘Good Friday’. No poster inviting Christians for the Passover services should have the word, whether digital or hard copies. The same goes for announcements and adds.
Thank you.
