God lives with us yet He is on the other side, a side we all know we will get to one day – the spiritual world. There is evidence of the spiritual world from what we do, speak, feel and confess. Many people perform some spiritual practices, whether it’s of Christ or not. Humans desire to connect with the supernatural world. The Bible is clear on the subject of spirituality. According to the Bible, there are angles and devils/demons at work in the spiritual world. The devil is seen entering the heart of Judas Iscariot in John 13:2 and angels are seen seated where Jesus’ body had been in John 20:12.
The Bible teaches that what we do in the physical world go on record in the Spiritual. No wonder the Bible in book of Romans 14:12 says that every man shall give an account to God one day. Then 2 Corinthians 5:10 goes into specifics and add that such things are those done in the flesh, whether good or bad.
As we live our short lives, we must be careful to do God’s works the way He wants, to the best of our abilities. Taking caution on this will help avoid working in vain. Many people have worked hard for God but they themselves got rejected because they have not been diligent in doing the work of the Lord according to the Bible.
I have found it helpful to always refer to the Bible for every activity that one does for the Lord. Once you do, you gain grounds to face the world, as well as God, and justify your actions.
Why it matters to work for God
- God has given mankind some tasks which must be fulfilled by those who get to learn about them. It must be clear that God’s word is directed to all living people, accepting it or not is another story. One very important task is to evangelize to others. Sharing the Gospel is a lifelong assignment that Christians should not tire doing. Jesus issued this instruction in Matthew 28 and it is considered the great commission.
- God has a good reward for those who work for Him. One of the most desired rewards, yet clearly stated in Collossians 3:22-24 is that of gaining inheritance to the Kingdom of God.
- Working for God keeps you awake to His presence in your life. While you work for God, you get to learn more about who He is. Whatever you frequently talk about, share with others and reflect on in your life remain in your mind. You will know how to live your life and make God happy, which is a high calling in itself.
- God’s work attracts the devils attention yet it makes you spiritually strong. Whenever you are attacked by the devil because you are actively destroying his work or working against his will, you have no choice but to take up your Christian armor and fight back. This is when you experience God’s defense on your behalf, which in turn gives you testimonies about your Christian faith.
It is therefore expected that one of the questions God will ask each of us when we die is, ‘what have you done for me?’ You must, particularly if you are a Christian, be ready to give an answer that won’t leave you ashamed.
Getting started doing God’s work
The starting point in doing God’s work is receiving salvation. No matter how good and proper your work is for God, it is futile to you if you do not have the right relationship with God. I have written an article on why it matters to attain salvation in the post ‘Attainment of Salvation is a Must’.
Once you have attained salvation, you then can work for God. Below I list a few things that you can do for God that count to Him.
- Giving – Tithes and freewill are a lesson on their own. Additionally, giving to the needy in form of alms and cash count as God’s work too. Jesus recognizes the giving of food and drink to those who do not have it as good deeds (Matthew 25:35).
- Hospitable deeds – You have to be welcoming to strangers, visit the sick and visit those in prison (Matthew 25:35 – 36).
- Digital preaching – Preaching today has gotten so easy and no one in this generation can claim to be restricted in any way. The good news is that social media, the most vibrant way of communicating one’s message, is largely accommodative to religious matters. A wise Christian takes advantage of these and share the Gospel.
- Serve in church – I consider the verse in 1 Peter 4:10-11 to mean that the specific activities we do to serve others in church such as singing, ushering, sweeping floors, etc. are ways of doing God’s work.
The fact is that the list shared above is not exhaustive. I could have added intercession, coaching, counseling, sponsoring church activities, one-one-one evangelism, encouraging others and many more. No believer can claim not to have anything to do for God. If you still feel nothing aligns with your interests and calling, pray to God to guide you and give you the courage to get started. Working for God is a must.
Be blessed.
