The notion that runs ‘content is king’ still holds even today. This is because content is means to earning money. The more the people ones content attract, the more the chances of making more money. Thus in quest for more money, people have wondered from faith and ignored the life God desires from them.
1 Timothy 6:10 – For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. NIV
The benefits of content creation used to be largely enjoyed by media houses such as national, international and other big broadcasting houses but today they have been brought down to individual levels. The most sought after benefit is money, which is an exciting and a powerful motivator. This money comes as a result of fame created by the type and volumes of content individuals freely share on the cloud.
God of Christians expect everyone, Christian or not, to live by His standards in all areas of life, including content creation. In short, no one is off the hock, even if they are non-Christian. Content comes in various forms such as videos, text, voice, pictures, etc.
One may question why or where to I get the notion that some content creation practices are sinful. The answer is simply that the Bible tells us so. In different portions of scriptures, the Bible lists sins but not all of them. However, in Romans 1:30 the Bible clearly declares that new sins are invented on an ongoing basis. Therefore, one may not find the exact sin listed in the Bible yet it still is sin because it violates God’s principle in one way or another.
Types of sinful content
- Deception. This is a very wide space to list everything about it. This covers all sorts of scams and fake presentation of results through tactful content creation. People have mastered the craft of convincing people to behave in a certain way, even to the point of forking out their hard earned money, just through compelling content creation. I like the steps presented by gobookmart.com on 16 steps to creating compelling content.
- Pride in sin. People have grown not to be ashamed of engaging in sins that are listed in the Bible. These include homosexuality and its related practices, sexual immorality, all sort of drunkenness and drug abuse, abuse of people and animals and bodily modifications.
- Immodesty or indecent dressing. The world marketing space is largely characterised by necked dressing and immodesty, especially with woman. The people that are willing to reveal more of their nakedness attract more viewers and therefore increase their chance of making money, which is unfortunately a trap.
- Obscene language. The tongue is powerful to attract listeners from various interest groups. The power of the tongue is explained in the James 3:5-6. People who talk and promote pervesion and waywardness are pealing to many. This includes people of dirty jokes and obscene language.
- Promoting false religion and cults. It is true that people who promote other religions believe that they are in the right path and they would say the same about Christians, yet God detests their practice. The Bible is clear that Christianity is not accommodative of even the slightest deviation from the truth.
- Selfish ambitions. This is content that takes advantage of other people’s ignorance and positions. Often such content is evidence of violating other people’s rights. Many forms of pranks fall under this category. Such content is growing at an alarming rate on social media and the internet at large. Some people get hurt physically, mentally and emotionally (and some for the rest of their lives) after they have been pranked.
- Anti-Christ. Bringing up supposed Bible contradictions and direct attack to Christian faith runs faster on the digital space.
Conclusion
It is unfortunate that some Christians are involved in the above listed content creation practices, yet the list is not exhaustive of abominable content creation types that people engage in. However, it all boils down to reading the Bible and knowing what God approves and that which He detests. It is not a secret that at the end of it all, every one of us will face God to give an account of what we did while living in the body (Revelation 20:12, 2 Corinthians 5:10, Romans 14:12).
Be blessed.
