How can we define the time we have in this world? How long is it? Why should we care whether it’s short or long? An attempt to explain the brief life we have in this world is what I will do in this post. There are things we see, do and think that serve as proof to the fact that our lives are very short in this life. Surprisingly, we hardly notice or even learn the fundamental lesson on the short life we live in this world.
What we can learn from the calendar
A digital calendar which could be on the phone, tablet, laptop or any other gadget serves as a good reminder of the short life we live in this world. One time my son and I paged the calendar forward until it reached a couple of thousands of years ahead. We then began thinking of what will happen at that time if Jesus tarries that much. Some of the things I noted about that time:
- This will be couple of generations ahead of us. Neither my son or I will be alive at that time.
- The house that I live in today will possible be dilapidated and a new structure would have to be erected in its place.
- Too little or nothing about us will be remembered then.
- Nothing of significance will change because we are no longer in the world.
As you may notice, there are a lot of things that are of importance today that will not matter then.
Our loved ones that pass on
Often the reality of death is taken for granted and not at all a sign that anyone of us could be next in the death line. It could be in the next minute or even a few seconds. Right now as you read this article, there is someone who could give anything to extend his or her life because death as come but there is nothing that can be done to extend the life. Sadly, someone is already on his way to hell for having ignored the message of Jesus Christ. Even for me, this could be the last article I will post in this blog before I die.
Death is not for a selected few but it is for everyone. Let no one deceive you to believe that since you have not fulfilled your mission in this world then it is a guarantee that you will live on a few more years. I know some pastors will tell you that. They are deceiving you, we are all going to die and nobody knows when his or her time will come.
Think of world icons that have passed on; Michael Jackson, Luther Vondrose, Brenda Fassie, Sifiso ncwane, Billy Graham, Steve Jobs, and many others that I may not even know. Some of them were very rich to the point they didn’t know what to do with their wealth. If at all humans had the ability to eliminate death, these people of fame could have saved their own lives. All of it was left behind.
Advise: Stick to what never changes
You could search everywhere but you will not find anything that has remained the same throughout generations except for the Word of God. Whatever has changed has been changed by human beings yet the Word of God has not changed and shall not change even in the future. Before the world was formed, the word of God existed. There are number of verses that confirm this notion.
the wise will take note of this reality and only ‘The wise shall shine at the brightness of the heavens,… (Daniel 12:2). This is wisdom shouting in the streets (Proverbs 1:20) at those that are ready to listen yet a few are ready to listed. True wisdom is found only in God of Christians (Romans 16:27; Job 12:13). If you want to be wise, read the Bible and practice what it says.
The Bible is very clear on the subject of life. It says that life is very short and it likens it to mere vapor (James 4:14). 1 Chronicles 29:15 says that, …Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. This is just what it is. We don’t even know what will happen to us in the next minute. if you are not a Christian already, I suggest that you do not delay but make things right with God just as you read through this article. Simply repent as Jesus commanded (Matthew 4:17; Luke 5:32; Luke 13:3) and live your life as the Bible directs.
Be blessed.
