Many churches have chosen Sunday as the day of worship God and fellowshipping together. Justifying whether the right day is Saturday or Sunday is a subject for another day. The Bible says a lot about people meeting together to do something in honour of God. In the Old Testament, the common word is on God’s people meeting in the meeting tent. In the New Testament, the Bible in Hebrews 10:25 says, ‘Not forsaking assembling of ourselves together, as in the manner of some…’ NKJV. If you search the scriptures, no record indicate that God’s people gathered in a synagogue or church just to give praises to someone else other than God.
This post is meant to be a reminder of what should not be the reason for going to church on Sunday. If you go to church for the wrong reasons and when such reasons no longer hold, you may find yourself not going to church at all. Furthermore, going to church for the wrong reasons may also make you lament why you wasted your time going to church. The right reasons never loss their worth and therefore should keep motivating you to attend.
In this post, I just want us to check and do a personal introspection on whether we have forgotten that going to church is not in our own interests but that of honouring God and fulfilling His commandments. It may not be obvious to most Christians and many may be unknowingly going to church for the wrong reasons. I would like for us to think together on the two following major things that could be reasons for some people to go to church .
- Falling in love with the men of God. The devil is very tactful in deceiving people to start worshiping their chosen church leaders instead of God who is the church owner. People unknowingly worship pastors, apostles, elders, etc. Reasons vary. It commonly could be because the leader is a miracle master or s/he preaches what people want to hear. Don’t let your pastor take God’s Glory for himself by worshiping him or her. Ask from God if you still focus on Him and not your pastor.
Some churches are named after the pastor or a particular glorified leader somewhere. Even when you go past that church or approach it, you see the face of that particular leader or leaders in large print. This may be in no bad intension but it has made the church to belong to the faces shown and not to God. Would you not agree with me that the church has shifted the focus from having it belong to God but to a certain Pastor or Apostle? Think about it.
To do a quick check as to whether you worship your leader and not God you may ask yourself if you would go to church even if your pastor would not be present? If not, then you need to do an introspection as to whether your pastor has become some sort of an idol to you or not.
- Falling in love with your church. It’s amazing how people are not ready to attend church in another church building except their own. Again, reasons vary and but it often is evident that these people would rather stay at home or attend a circular event if they had to attend in another church. They have changed the focus to physical things and people but not God who is omniscient, omnipresent and all powerful.
Check if you would rather attend a soccer match or go for sports if your church were to be closed in a particular Sunday. If you would, then consider if you have shifted your focus from God who is to be worshiped from anywhere to your church structure as the only suitable place to praise God.
Please note that I also have to do a personal introspection of the same just like everybody else. I understand that there are many other reasons that could either be personal or general but we need to change our entire focus to God.
No man or structure should limit our devotion to God. God still experts us to be His subjects no matter who our leader is nor the church that we go to. This is not to say that going to church is wrong but that the right reasons should hold at all times, particularly for the converted.
In articles to follow, I will address the subject on the right reasons for going to church. You are welcome to check again or register your name in this link or go to the home page to get notices of all articles follow. Thank you for visiting this website. Please share this post with others.
Thank you so much for this post brother Musawenkosi Dube.
Other wrong reasons include:
They have a lot of programs
To show off your body or clothes
They have a school
It’s a big church
The people are very nice
I love their music
Musa thanks for another great post. Its so true that many of us go to church for wrong reasons. Many are worshipping the pastors unknowingly. You will know that you went to church for the right reason when you feel fully convicted and when you get home the first thing you do is to open your bible to go over what was preached. If you just come out feeling good you should just know that you just received your weekly spiritual injection.
