The name Jesus

The Holy Name of Jesus...Allow me to remind you that Jesus Christ is Lord, the Savior and the Son of God. The name Jesus is the only name given unto man for the many spiritual solutions mankind needs. A direct quote from the Bible tells us how important the name Jesus is. I quote, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

The name ‘Jesus’ is to be given out with its total package of healing absolutely free. Then Peter said in Acts 3:6, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” This was given to the recipient free of charge. Jesus said in Matthew 10: 8, “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give”.

Jesus Himself commits to honor His name in John 14:14. He says, ‘You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it”.  The name unlocks scores of blessings for the one that asks in the name of Jesus.

A word of caution

Jesus need not be given any nick names. No matter the justification or the theological analysis that produce names that may seem good enough to substitute or complement the name Jesus, it is not right.

All these other names have no power over the principalities we fight. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12). In the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (Philippians 2:10).

There are some 200 names and titles of Christ found in the Bible (see this link). However, I would not encourage Christians or anyone to substitute the name of Jesus for any other name. I justify my position by the fact that as much as we know that Jesus, God the Father and the Holy Spirit are one, we don’t pray in the name of the others but only in the name of Jesus.

I believe that sticking to the name of Jesus makes things very easy for us. By sticking to the name of Jesus we avoid all unnecessary complications about Christ and His names. We may never know whether all the names that are given to Jesus’ name truly mean the Jesus of the Bible. The same can be said about the name God and that of Allah. Many people believe the name Allah means the same God of Christians, which is not true.

I encourage Christians to leave the complicated names to Theologians but stick to what works and the simplified for all. I’m not encouraging people not to study the Bible but sounding a word of caution.

Another thing that we must remember is that the devil is at work. He knows that his time is limited (Revelation 12:12). The confusion that comes with these names is not desirable yet it is the playground of the devil and he would aggravate it. You therefore don’t want to be part of that and therefore it works best for you and me to stick to the name of Jesus.

Quality that defines who Jesus Christ is

Before I sign off this article, I wanted to comment on the qualities of Jesus, which are the same with those of God and the Holy Spirit. These qualities can be used to defining who God is but not changing His name or identity.

It is accurately right to say that Jesus is love, He is just, sovereign, merciful, kind, righteous, etc. These qualities should not be confused with the name of Jesus.
