the Christian faith and their role is distinct and clearly defined in the Bible. It is the Bible that gives instructions to live by for the Christian and any of the Christians that want to make it to heaven must abide or else they do not qualify. Men also do dress up immodestly but in this post I will be focusing on woman.
It is sad that some woman in the body of Christ today resist the instructions that are clearly written in the Word of God, and they get uncomfortable when such are discussed. Later in the post I will give advice on how to know if what you are doing is right or wrong but first let me give the three areas of concern in the church of Christ today, particularly with respect to woman.
Dress code
Modesty is largely a subject of how we dress up and it does not matter the occasion. You could be going to town just to do your shopping, attending a certain occasion or staying at home, but the call for woman (and everybody else) is to dress up modestly. In the home, dress up the way your husband wants you to but if there are other people, respect them and dress modestly in the public code.
If we go to the Bible, 1 Timothy 2:9 brings up the issue of the dress code. Immodesty is dressing up to draw attention to yourself. This is largely characterized by clothes that reveal in part or sometimes in full some of sexually attractive parts of a woman’s body. These are body parts that trigger sexual interest in other people and even to one’s self. Obvious ones are breasts, thighs, buttocks and the abdomen.

Woman today have rights to wear whatever they please and they enjoy this kind of legal protection. All that the Bible says about dressing modestly has been put aside and what matters is what the world accepts and the protection national laws give to woman. It is sad that God’s standard has not changed and it never will. You today have to choose whether you go with the worldly standard and protection or you do as God instructs.
I recommend the article ‘What does it mean to dress modestly?’ I was actually surprised to learn that there is hardly any resource on the internet that addresses this subject directly.
Submitting to husbands
God has designed man to be a leader, not only in the family but everywhere else even in church, but in this article we will focus in the family. Many women don’t like this notion because it touched on their failure to submit where they have to. Similar to the preceding point on dress code, man also have a role to play in this area too.
Colossians 3:18, 1 Peter 3:1, Ephesians 5:22 addresses this subject perfectly. It is to married woman and to their own husbands. This does not mean that the man should bully the wife; neither does it mean he should not take advice from the wife. However, it does mean that the woman may not control the man in any way unless the man concerted. The woman may not spend money anyhow, even if it is money she earned. Proverbs 14:1 is a verse directed to woman, and those women that do not submit, they tears it down with her own hands.
Solemn recommendation
I have a suggestion that beats everything else on how to know if you are on the wrong regarding the dress code and submitting to your husband.
Christian living is about the relationship you have with Christ. It is not about religion, self-righteousness or taking instructions. A relationship is sweet and smooth as long as you are in common ground with the person you have a relationship with. You know at once when something might have gone wrong whether in speech, deed, thought or expression. That’s the kind of relationship with Christ that will make you know whether what you are doing is right or wrong. The only way is spending time with God in prayer and reading the Word.
Thanks be to God that He is ready to forgive a person that repents and leave wrong doing. It’s pointless to ask for forgiveness but still continue to do the same wrong thing. What I’m saying is that you must ensure that your relationship with Christ is right and anything that disturbs it should be dealt with and corrected.
It is not too late to start doing right, you can and all it takes is humbling yourself in the sight of the Lord and do as He wants (John 14:15, John 15:14). Be blessed.
