The word salvation comes from the word save. Christians claim to be saved but really is such salvation guaranteed? Not at all, only the ones that endure to the end shall be saved (Matthew 24:23). Until then, nobody is saved yet it’s an acceptable claim to be saved because it is a process of working out one’s salvation.
Working out your salvation involves a lot of things but it can be summed up to keeping God’s commandments to the best of you capability. Solomon of old wrote that the entire duty of man is to fear God and keep His commands (Eccl. 12:13). The act of working out your salvation can be termed ‘living a holy life’, without which no man shall see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).
Salvation is attainable only for the living. A second after you die, it already is too late to consider it. AS soon as you die, even while your body hasn’t lost its temperature, your soul falls into the dungeon of hell where it shall be forever and ever.
Steps to Attaining Salvation
The starting point is for you to realise that you are a sinner and condemned to eternal death is you die without Jesus in your life. Eternal death is being locked up in hell forever. I have attempted to define hell in some of my post; ‘The Infernal Dungeon of hell’, ‘How hell feels’ and ‘How often have you been told – is the first question in hell’ to name a few.
Each one of the living can escape hell, which in itself is a receiving salvation, through accepting Jesus Christ into his / her life. How to receive Jesus Christ is simple. Confess with your mouth that ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the death; you will be saved (Romans 10:9).
The third step is abiding by God’s commandments. These commandments are enclosed in the Holy Bible with you as a new convert must unpack. The way to unpack is studying the Bible and meditating on the message. The best way that has made me enjoy reading the Bible is to start with prayer for concentration and discernment of the scriptures.
Why Salvation?
Salvation through Jesus Christ has countless benefits. Some include the following:
- You are empowered to overcome the devil (Luke 10:19). When one is exposed to the devil, s/he becomes fearful of anything. The devil tosses the person around aimlessly and even exposes him to shame. Many spend their hard earned cash on safety that really does not work. The Bible tells us not to fear him that kills only the body but rather fear God who is able to destroy both body and soul (Mathew 10:28).
- You are favoured and treasured by not only Jesus Christ but also by God the Father. You become the apple of God’s eye (Zechariah 2:8).
- You are assured of your salvation. Today you can be saved and have eternal life, and the sure peace of knowing you are. That is God’s promise! To learn more on the assurance of your salvation, I refer you to the article by Cooper Abrams.
