The Most Desired Prayer for all the Living – Psalms 119: 18

The prayer that every living person should say is ‘Open my eyes, so that I may see the wonderful truths in your law’. In the book of Psalms, this prayer is an individual prayer by David. In this instance, the Psalm is a prayer. However, sometimes a Psalm can be for praising the Lord.

All living people should pray this prayer because it is relevant and required even today. David was speaking to God (verse 4) after having identified the weakness in his eyes. The writer, David, is not praying this prayer for other people but for himself. David’s prayer supports the notion that the issue between man and God is first personal and thereafter one can sort issues with people. Furthermore, it is good practice for people to deal with issues one-on-one with God.

The Hidden Eyes in Every Man

David was physically not blind but he is praying to God for his eyes to be open. To prove that David was not blind, the Bible records that David saw Saul when he wanted to kill him. There are several other instances that are recorded in scripture that are evidence of that David was not physically blind. The big question then becomes, ‘what type of eyes is David referring to?’ The following scriptural stories will help in explaining the eyes David is referring to.

  1. Number 22: 31, ‘Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the LORD standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; and he bowed his heard and fell flat on his face’. Verse 34; ‘And Balaam said to the Angel of the LORD, “I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it displeases You, I will turn back.”

Balaam was riding on a donkey when he met the Angel. The donkey saw the Angel, but Balaam did not see the Angel. That is why the donkey did not go forward but took turns to the left and to the right. It is recorded that God then opened the donkey’s mouth (verse 28) and it spoke to Balaam.

Therefore, the eyes referred to here are Spiritual eyes, ones that make one to see God’s hidden secretes. These eyes are not to see witches at night and other filthy practices by others, but to see and know what God desires from one’s life.

  1. 2 Kings 6: 15 – 17, Gehazi, Elisha’s servant saw enemies with his physical eyes but did not see the LORD’s army that was surrounding Elisha. Gehazi only saw the LORD’s army on their side after Elisha’s prayer for Gehazi’s eyes to be open. It is apparent that Elisha’s Spiritual eyes were open.

When spiritual eyes are open, there are more important things to see and understand. David had understanding that open Spiritual eyes give God’s given direction in His word.

People that have their eyes closed do not understand what Christianity is all about. They think Christians are foregoing nice times in the world and they are stupid. All it needs for such people is for their eyes to be open. Eyes open to observing God’s Word leads to life. Whatever the Word says, an eye opened person keeps God’s commands.

Closed Eyes Examples

There are many examples that indicate if a person’s Spiritual eyes are closed. Two examples are theft and sexual immorality.

  1. Stealing seems to have many benefits yet the Holy Bible is against it. People think quick success comes through theft and whoever stops theft is against success. However, the pain of going behind bars is experienced by the thief.
  2. Forbidding people from fornication and adultery are often perceived by non-believers as tricks by Christians to stop them from enjoying nice times, yet it is command from God’s Word. God knew that fornication and adultery leads to all the related problems we see; premature pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, marital conflicts, etc.

Conclusion

When God commands you to observe something, it is for your good. The Spiritual eyes are a requirement for every believer to remain on track. It is dangerous for Christians to have their Spiritual eyes blind because they become vulnerable to danger and always learn by first committing mistakes. For example, these eyes will help the believer see if the party she or he is invited to has an unclean plan.

Therefore, all people should pray for their Spiritual eyes to be open to survive.
