The deception on healthy living and living longer

Healthy living does not add life to people

Healthy living does not add life to people

Healthy living is good and I believe God supports it as He surely is not happy when we are sick and suffering. This is reveal by Jesus when He healed a leaper. Read the article, ‘Jesus’ will for your health condition’.

Earthly healthy living is defined by doing some of the following:

  • Taking a calculated diet,
  • Doing exercises,
  • Getting enough sleep,
  • Making time for playing,
  • Eating healthily,
  • Taking all sorts of supplements,
  • Making medical check-ups routinely, etc.

These things are largely perceived as extending one’s life in this world rather than enhancing a healthy life in the time one lives in this world. This is exactly where the deception lies, ‘healthy living equals long life’.

Later I will comment on shortening your life as a direct opposite to trying to lengthen it. Let’s study a few verses that enlighten us to the fact that life of the living is short and measured, no matter your lifestyle.

  1. Job 14:5 – A person’s days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.
  2. Psalm 39:4 – “LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered–how fleeting my life is.
  3. Matthew 6:27 – And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? ESV

I could substitute ‘anxious’ with ‘healthy living’ or anything believed to lengthen one’s life in this verse and it would still apply.

These verses give us a clear picture of the reality that we all know, ‘we shall die one day’ (Ecclesiastes 9:5) and they add to it that ‘we have no influence of when we shall die’. This is really not a cause for worry because worry does not change anything but only creates an emotional burden.

The real source of life extension

I have news from the Bible that clearly informs us that it is only God who has the power to extend one’s life and He alone. There are times where we could have thought our right behaviour has saved us from death yet the truth is that God has made whatever we give credit to work for us. Take the case of having an operation to remove a deadly tumor. We would think the solution has come from the doctors that did the procedure yet that is not the case because life is in the hands of God.

  1. Job 12:10 – In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.
  2. Psalm 31:15 – My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.

The Bible gives us a practical example of a prophet known by the name Hzekiah who prayed to God for a 15 year life extension when his time to die had come. These words are recorded in 2 Kings 20.

1 In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, “Thus says theLord: ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die, and not live.’”

2 Then he turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the Lord, saying, 3 “Remember now, O Lord, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what was good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

And it happened, before Isaiah had gone out into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 5 “Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord.6 And I will add to your days fifteen years…

God hears our prayers when we pray, just like He did with Hezekiah. I am confident that there are many of us whom God has granted the grace to extend their lives in this world. The difference with us is that we normally don’t know the number of days God ads when we pray to Him. We also may not have cried bitterly for our healing as much as Hezekiah did but God chooses the grace He gives to those that pray to Him. His will is not questioned in Heaven and therefore we shouldn’t question it in this world too.

Shortening your life

Some people do shorten their lives by the way the live. Some even literally kill themselves just so they no longer experience this life. The point I’m driving at is that God does NOT want for people to end their lives yet He won’t stop the determined from doing it. He never forces His way into people’s will. Just like He won’t forcefully stop anyone from fornicating, He wont even for a suicide attempt.

There are verses to support my claim but this is a subject I would gladly address in a separate article yet I wanted to mention this fact too. The sad news is that anyone who kills himself or herself never makes it to heaven. The destination for such people is hell fire. I have covered a lot of ground on hell and how it feels in this blog. You are welcome to browse through the articles outlined in the home page.

Conclusion

Healthy living is not a bad idea but it must be clear to everyone that it does not add the number of days in our lives but only God does. The devil would use this deception with many and make them live anyhow, like doing displeasing things in God’s sight, with the hope that they have some sort of guarantee to live long enough to estimate when the time of their death.

The Word of God recorded in the Bible gives us wisdom to know that this is not the case. Wisdom is only found in the Bible.

My point is this,

‘life a healthy lifestyle while your life is in good position with God, knowing that you may die even in the gym, in the hands of the doctor, while taking your supplements, etc. but when only your time has come’.

Be blessed.
